| Big White Ski Resort - Canada 2012 |
I took this photo this year on my trip to Canada, as you can see in the photo the house is made from solid pieces of timber sourced from the area. The house has many extremely large trees fashioned as bracing and structural supports. The houses must be extremely strong to not only withstand the freezing conditions, but also the physical conditions. On top of the wooden roof as you can see is around 60cm worth of snow, placing an enormous weight on the roof. Ordinary homes would not stand a chance to the weight of the snow, simply caving in. Metal reinforcement is really used in this style of house due to aesthetic reasons and also because it is simply to cold, the metal expands and contracts over time due to the changing weather conditions making the metal extremely fragile resulting in the metal simply bending and cracking.
